See what each hospital officially says about its international services, and what is still unconfirmed.

  3. Inquire

Tell us your medical needs — diagnosis or symptoms, treatment so far and what you hope for.

  4. Match

A person replies with providers that may fit. Nothing is shared with a hospital until you agree.

Plaque naming Longhua Hospital a Shanghai International Medical Tourism Pilot Institution of Public Hospital (2023–2025)

A plaque at Longhua Hospital naming it a Shanghai international medical tourism pilot institution. An official designation goes on a profile only when we can cite it.

How a hospital gets listed

Every provider is screened before it appears here. Payment cannot get a hospital past this check, and listings are alphabetical.

Licensed to diagnose and treat
A medical institution licensed or registered with Chinese health authorities. We add the licence or filing number to the profile once we have checked it.
Identity confirmed
Legal name, address and official website confirmed from the hospital’s own pages or government sources.
Grade shown only when official
A grade such as Grade III, Class A appears only where the hospital or a health authority states it on an official page.
Rechecked on a schedule
Every listing is rechecked at least every 6 to 12 months. A hospital that no longer meets the standard is removed.

Medical Tourism in China: What International Patients Should Know

How China's hospital system is organised for patients from abroad, which programmes cities and the national government run for them, and how entry, payment and records work — every figure from an official source.

  5. An empty waiting corridor with chairs, and a scanner seen through an open door
06Private MRI Cost and Wait TimesHow long the wait for a non-urgent MRI is in Canada, England and Australia, how that compares with what is published for China, what a private MRI scan costs in each, and what to weigh before you travel for one. Questions patients ask first

Each answer comes from one of our guides, where its sources are listed.

Medical care in China for foreigners →

What is a VIP department in a Chinese hospital?

An international or special-needs unit inside a hospital — usually a large public hospital — rather than a separate private chain. These units handle language support, scheduling and privacy differently from general wards and are priced by the market. Services vary widely by city and institution, so confirm that a specific department handles your condition before booking.

Is there a dedicated medical visa for traveling to China for treatment?

No. Treatment is a private-affairs purpose, so patients normally apply for an S2 visa with the hospital's admission or proposed-treatment certificate. Requirements vary by treatment length and nationality; confirm with the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application center before booking flights.

What records should foreign patients bring for medical care in China?

Actual documentation, not a summary written from memory — prior imaging, lab results and physician notes, translated where possible. Hospitals use these records to confirm whether an appointment or treatment pathway makes sense before the patient arrives. Arriving without them risks delays or refusal at intake.

Do foreign patients need travel insurance for medical care in China?

Yes, in practice. China's insurance runs on two tracks — employee insurance (about 379 million people, 29% of the covered population) and resident insurance (about 947 million, 71%) — and both depend on employment or residence in China. Foreigners employed in China must join employee insurance; patients travelling for treatment pay privately or through international coverage. Confirm your insurance before departure.

How do you choose which hospitals to list?

Every provider is screened first. It must be a medical institution licensed by Chinese health authorities, with its identity confirmed from official sources. We add its licence or filing number once we have checked it, record what it offers international patients and recheck every listing at least every 6 to 12 months.

Do hospitals pay to be listed or ranked higher?

A basic listing is free, and payment cannot get a hospital past our screening. We do not rank hospitals — the unpaid list is alphabetical. Hospitals on paid plans can have a featured placement, shown separately and labelled Sponsored, and any paid relationship is labelled on the profile.

Anatomy of a fact

Every claim on a profile can be traced. Where we could not confirm something from an official source, we say so instead of guessing. Every inquiry is read and answered by a person.
